Identify Resources

In order to complete and maintain a Web site, your organization must ensure that it has the proper people, skills, and other resources in place. The resources required depend on a number of decisions the organization must make. The most important decision affecting skills, staff, and time is whether development and maintenance will be done in-house or will be done using the outside expertise of a Web Design Firm. This decision is particularly important in non-profit arts organizations, where available resources are usually at a premium.

If the work will be done internally, the person or people doing the work must have the proper tools to create and update the site. You should determine which people and tools will be required for different types of maintenance, such as corrections and additions, routine updates, minor overhauls, and major overhauls. You must also decide how often the site will need to be updated. Finally, based on these decisions and assessments, figure out how the requirements of this project will effect the staff’s ability to carry out their other duties.

If the work will be contracted out, staff time is still required to make the project successful. Your arts organization must still plan the goals and objectives of the Web site and do the initial planning. Staff members must also be available to interact with the developer during all stages of the development and maintenance. As with in-house development, you must determine how these responsibilities will impact on staff members’ other tasks.
