The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) defines distance
learning as the acquisition of knowledge and skills through mediated
information and instruction, encompassing all technologies and other
forms of learning at a distance. This method differs from traditional
instructional methods because the instructor and student are separated
by distance and all communication is conducted through technology. Distance
learning is not only used in the classroom; it is also an effective
educational tool for corporate, military and government training.
Research findings state that distance
learning is as effective as traditional instructional methods. Although
limited studies have been conducted on students in grades K through
12, students feel positive about their experiences. In particular, students
pursuing higher and continuing education feel that distance learning
is a convenient mechanism for receiving college credits.
Your arts organization can help schools
by becoming a distance learning content provider. Your organization
needs to be connected to a fiber-optic
network in order to provide an educational environment to different
schools or sites at the same time. You can provide seminars and workshops,
dance and concert performances, plays and exhibits to a much larger
audience, as well as to students who would not otherwise be able to
attend your programs. Because your organization will be connected to
this network of different sites, you
will interact with and gather students from different social, cultural,
and economic backgrounds.
Distance learning provides new educational
opportunities and learning tools for students that will enhance learning.
In addition, it is an excellent marketing tool because it allows your
organization to partner with schools, businesses, government, and other
cultural and educational organizations within your community. Establishing
these relationships can play a vital role in influencing decision making,
as well as educational policy issues surrounding arts education in your
community.
