Master of Entertainment Industry Management Program

Why Carnegie Mellon?

The Master of Entertainment Industry Management (MEIM) Program complements the creative and aesthetic skills you honed in undergraduate school with a professional management education that prepare you for a leadership career in the film and television industry.

The MEIM Program’s goal is to provide you with the perspectives, skills, insights, knowledge, context and confidence you need to contribute to the success of the entertainment industry as management executives in film studios, television production companies and related industry firms.  The focus of the MEIM Program is management within the entertainment industry – finance, marketing, business affairs, distribution, business development, etc. – and not the creative or production side of the business.  Our vision is an industry populated by individuals well-prepared for successful careers facilitating the creative work of artists and artisans in order to generate both good products and large profits.

First Year in Pittsburgh, Second Year in Los Angeles

“My experience far surpassed my expectations.  What other program gives you the opportunity to have face time with prestigious alumni such as  Paula Wagner, to intern at ICM, or to present ideas for the fall television schedule to Fox executives like Peter Liguori and Peter Churnin?”

Lee Hollin, MEIM Class of 2007.
Coordinator, Drama Development and Current Programming, Fox Broadcasting Company

The MEIM Program offers management training for private-sector entertainment businesses with one vital distinction: a unique blend of Carnegie Mellon’s renowned rigorous, academic training coupled with on-site, hands-on training within the film and television industry in Los Angeles.  You spend the first year of study in core management coursework on Carnegie Mellon’s Pittsburgh campus, providing you with the bedrock of skills and ways of thinking you’ll need to succeed.  For the second year, you move to Los Angeles, where you will expand and enrich your management skills, theories and techniques through specialized coursework taught by some of the entertainment industry’s leading professionals.  In addition, you will work side-by-side with industry professionals through the year as a full-time intern in a studio, production company or entertainment firm.

The MEIM Program offers you a balance of the practical and theoretical, providing you with the tools to learn both what to do and why it is done.  This integrated opportunity offers:

  • A quantitative management education that teaches core management principles and practices with the context of the challenges and entrepreneurial possibilities of the creative industries.
  • On-site exploration of how management principles are applied in the entertainment industry.
  • Opportunities to build the critical professional and social networks that will assist you in your career development.
  • The benefits of Carnegie Mellon’s strong reputation for excellence within the entertainment industry, and the large network of alumni and friends within it who make themselves available to you.

Carnegie Mellon University is synonymous with visionary, world-class education. From the engineers in the Robotics Institute to the drama majors at the College of Fine Arts, Carnegie Mellon is an international leader, consistently defining new standards in the academic and professional spheres. The Master of Entertainment Industry Management Program draws from the comparative advantages of two of Carnegie Mellon's greatest strengths - the College of Fine Arts (CFA) and the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management (Heinz School).

The Commitment to the Creative Process - to the Art of Storytelling

Further distinguishing the MEIM Program is Carnegie Mellon's understanding of, respect for and commitment to the very force at the core of this industry: the desire to tell a story and to tell it well. Managers in creative enterprises have distinctly different missions from their counterparts in other industries; ultimately, their role is to facilitate -- effectively and efficiently -- the work of artists and artisans whose inspiration and efforts captivate the audience.

All Within the Larger Context of the Creative Sector

Yet there's more. Carnegie Mellon recognizes that the film and television industry is but one part of a larger creative sector that encompasses all disciplines and sectors. Traditionally, for-profit entertainment and non-profit arts and culture have been considered two distinct worlds, but "leadership," "vision" and "good management" are the same in both. The lines between for-profit and non-profit have blurred significantly in the recent past, and collaboration has become increasingly common. Leaders now much understand and know how to maneuver through the challenges and opportunities in both. Artists, audiences and funders move back and forth regularly between the two sectors, and all of us must understand the larger creative enterprise sector and appreciate our position on that landscape.

What's in a Name?

Regardless of what you call it -- entertainment management, media management, film management, TV management, producing -- we invite you to investigate the opportunity to be part of Carnegie Mellon's MEIM Program.
